Life's a Canvas  (Purchase book here)

Right ‘round sunrise on most every day
Somethin’ taps my dream, time to make hay
Might be the alarm, my pa or big mama
Doesn’t matter who, time to be my own Dalai Lama
I say this day is mine, to grab by the collar
This day is mine, to take, create and be the scholar
I can be smart or lazy, a battle of wills
But smart comes in handy, pays the bills
So let’s go baby, let’s go son
This day's a challenge, to be won
I live to learn, and I’ve learned to give
It’s not about me, it’s how I live
You might say I’ll do it later
Your life’s a canvas, you’re the painter
Every destination has a price to pay
Life’s what you make it, that’s what I say

There’s a new day comin’, as this ol’ earth spins
It’s been this way, since time began
We’re all on, a giant marble
Spins around, but don’t be startled
Twenty-four seven, for you to enjoy
Choices are made to matter girls and boys
I can be nice or mean, it’s that simple
Nice is better, than bein’ a pimple
So let’s go baby, let’s go son
This days a challenge, to be won
I live to learn, and I’ve learned to give
It’s not about me, it’s how I live
You might say I’ll do it later
Your life’s a canvas, you’re the painter
Every destination has a price to pay
Life’s what you make it, that’s what I say
So right ‘round sunrise, on most every day
When somethin’ taps your dream, time to make hay
Might be the alarm, your pa or big mama
Say doesn’t matter who, time to be my own Dalai Lama

Figurative Language  Lesson (link)

I love recess like a dog loves bones
That’s a simile  that old boat sank like a stone
Similes compare two things using like or as
She ran like a deer, she ran real fast

My brother is a bear every morning
That's a metaphor meaning he’s grouchy without warning
Metaphors compare two things without like or as
That man was a mountain you could not pass

Mary made mulberry muffins
That’s alliteration, like Karen kept crushin’
Don’t judge a book by it’s cover
That’s a idiom, a wise sayin’ you’ll discover

I'm grounded for a thousand years
A hyperbole, big exaggeration, but I feel the fear
So if I don't clean my room, and get it together
I'll be doin' hard time and feel under the weather

My friend said pardon me after squishin’ my toe
That’s a onomatopoeia son as I groaned oh no
When the word is spelled like it sounds
A dog went bow-wow once the bone was found

The thunder grumbled like an old man
That’s personification as the rain slapped the land
When you give non-human things human qualities
When the wind howls, growls and beats up the trees

So you know imagery is vivid descriptions
Grabs our senses, love this curious condition
Like the time I worked on a dinner cruise boat
I was the chef’s assistant, wore a chef’s hat, chef’s coat
After dinner, everyone’s dancing as I leaned on the door
Until a lady in red led me out on the floor
Life was firing on all cylinders, even with the stained shirt
I smelled like dinner, but danced like dessert

So, when it comes down to it...you have to know what these are
All of this is figurative language or imagery, driving this car
When you read, these are the phrases that get your attention
And when you write, paint a picture with your words before you’re done

lyrics: Randall Beaird       Melody/vocals: Ed Privat

Context Clues

Lesson (link)

When you stumble on a word
Maybe one you’ve never heard
Say, Hmm, I wonder what you’re all about
Yeah, I have context clues to figure you out
I’ll read before and after you, you ol’ enigma
And real soon son, you won’t be a stigma
Cause I see you hidin’ there pretty good
But I’m checkin’ all ‘round your neighborhood
I’ll figure you out though, no problem
‘Cause strange words, I’m always solvin'

Lyrics: RC Beaird    Vocals: Cole Jenkins

 Main Idea   Lesson (link)

There once was a kid named Fred
Who came to me one day and said
I just learned a term in class
I understand the main idea at long last
It's what the story's mostly about
That's right, the main idea, no doubt
So don't ramble on telling me tales
I don't want the little bitty details
Just the main idea, and let's hit the trail

lyrics: RC Beaird      melody/vocals: Jason Beaird

Prediction, Foreshadowing and Flashback  Lesson (link)

When you read and guess what will happen next
You predict, you're making an educated guess
Combine what you know, infer or conclude
Make an inference or logical conclusion, dude
When the author hints about what's to come

That’s foreshadowing or like ‘this might happen son’
When the writer goes back to a distant memory
That’s a flashback.....like ‘believe it or not, that was once me’

(lyrics: RC Beaird     melody/vocals:Kath Bee)

Theme   Lesson (link)

Way way back when I hit 4th grade runnin'

My teacher taught me about "theme," man it was somethin'

She said authors try to be a little on the wise side

They want to teach us lessons in life, like a guide

So when you hear, What's the theme?

Don’t worry, don't quarrel

Ask what does the author want us to learn?

Or, what is the moral?

(lyrics: RC Beaird     melody/vocals:Kath Bee)

Shawnee Grove (Educational Board Game, free download)

There’s a place down south where the bamboo grows

Where the pandas roam and the wild winds blow

Where the Shawnee Indians lived long ago

Come on down, welcome to Shawnee Grove

There’s a place down south where a trail winds through

Where you walk with caution and you watch every move

Where the Shawnee Indians lived long ago

Come on down, welcome to Shawnee Grove

There’s a place down south where millions have been

Where you read what they read and knowledge  becomes your friend

Where the Shawnee Indians lived long ago

Come on down, welcome to Shawnee Grove

Chicken City Shuffle (goes with "Chicken City" children's book, (Purchase Here)

Every mornin'

When your belly rumbles, and you must choose

I'm here to say and this isn't new news
There's a certain bird that knows how to deliver
A 'lil somthin' somethin', mmm, as nostrils quiver

They'll swim for a while, even more than a mile
For a fried egg sandwich, I call them fried egg bandits
Boiled or scrambled, love to see on the table
So let's get off that couch, I know you're able
Come on now, work those muscles
Let's all do the Chicken City shuffle

Say here chick chick chick-eeee when it's time to feed
Hear bock bock bock-ay once the egg is laid
Yeah come on now, work those muscles
Let's all do the Chicken City shuffle

Lyrics: RC Beaird      Melody/vocals: Ed Privat

Hog Heaven (goes with "Hog Heaven" children's book, (Purchase Here)

Just the other day, down on the farm

Held a little vote, who had the most charm

Why who could it be, lil’ Ms. Rita don’t you know

When she heard she won, put on a lil’ show

Now let’s all dance with the lovely cool pig

We’ll call it big mama samba Ms. Red Rita Jig

Legs up! What? Arms high! Oh my, she’s gonna’ be big

We’re all dancin’ the big mamba samba Ms. Red Rita Jig

Just the other day, down on the farm

Had a few friends down, who lost their charm

Let someone out, lil’ Ms. Rita don’t you know

Runnin’ wild and crazy, put on a lil’ show

Now let’s all dance with the lovely cool pig

We’ll call it big mama samba Ms. Red Rita Jig

Legs up! What? Arms high! Oh my, she’s gonna be big

We’re all dancin’ the big mamba samba Ms. Red Rita jig

Just the other day, down on the farm

Had a few tomatoes, who felt somethin’ warm

Eatin’ like candy, lil’ Ms. Rita don’t you know

Chompin’ down hungry, put on a lil’ show

Now let’s all dance with the lovely cool pig

We’ll call it big mama samba Ms. Red Rita jig

Legs up! What? Arms high! Oh my, she’s gonna be big

We’re all dancin’ the big mamba samba Ms. Red Rita Jig
